Scrambles

Back in 1987, two or three of the original founders had been taking part in Pre-65 demonstrations at modern motocross meetings but could see the need for a club to promote British Bike scrambles and so Bath Classic Motorcycle Club was born.

Our Scrambles Secretary and his team work hard each year organising the scramble and reinstating the track year for the forthcoming season.  Our scrambles meeting caters for Pre-60, Pre-65, Pre-74, Circa (pre-77) and twin-shock machines.
Work parties Dates to be advised. Contact Scrambles Secretary Phil Nicholls 07973 915792 for dates. If you do attending a work party, please sign on the AMCA form – this helps get you an entry for the next scramble!.

If you would like to get close to the action on the day, ask about becoming a flag marshall.

The Club is affiliated to the AMCA www.amca.uk.com

2025 Scrambles Report – Unfortunately we had to cancel our 2025 event as we lost the use of the land for our spring scramble. We were given the use for later in the year but with a full calendar of events already in place throughout the year it was decided to forgo the event. We will however be back in 2026 with another great event at Yatton Keynell.

2024 Scrambles Report Now that the dust has settled (or should I say mud?) all things considered, what a brilliant meeting we had. I turned up on the Friday before our meeting in my camper about 11.30 to be greeted by Steve Iles Snr & Jnr grading the track where the 4×4 boys & the farmer had made a bit of a mess.  Steve Jnr wasn’t feeling a 100% so by about 1.30 (after throwing up twice) he decided to call it a day and I didn’t blame him) so Steve Snr and I carried on putting up banners etc.  Steve Snr left about 3 pm to fettle his bike ready for the weekend.  I with the help of a 16-ton machine tracked the start straight and top of the track in,  to ensure it was flat.  The sun was shining and the ground was perfect.

We had rain Friday night but the ground held up well and nearly everyone that arrived Saturday to camp drove in. Ashley – the caterer- arrived set their stall and started selling cups of tea & coffee.  Jon Griffin arrived and set up his sign-on area for the Trials.  Jon was promptly followed by the trials boys, and what an excellent trial it was.  (I’ll leave it to Jon to do the trials write up)

Matty Taylor and a few of our regular work party lads arrived, Matty set to in the machine and continued grading parts of the track that we hadn’t finished Friday, whilst the work party gang finished taping the non-roped sections of the track and the reminder of the banners etc. Everything was going well until Saturday night/Sunday morning.  What a deluge of rain, it was relentless.  I got up about 6 o’clock Sunday morning to be greeted with waterlogged pits and a very wet track! Matty Taylor (Clark of the course) arrived and immediately set to towing people in.  Track Times set up to sign on the riders whilst Jeremy Winn (Chief Marshal) and son Luke arrived and set up to sign on the officials.  Once everyone was signed in, Marshals, Medics, Riders, Photographers etc and after a course inspection, Matty decided to delay the start of practice for an hour. (the right decision) By the time it came to start the races, the rain had stopped and things were slowly improving.  The track was challenging to ride in the morning but was improving all the time.  After the first block of racing, we stopped for a lunch break and after lunch the decision was made to remove the middle block of racing due to time constraints and go straight into the last block although by now the track was almost perfect to ride.  The day was topped off with a presentation for the Championship riders, organised by Emma Partington and the championship committee.

Then the team set-to towing competitors out of  pits.  A big thank you must go to Will Rich for coming along with his Unimog to tow people out, also Harry Cox for getting one of his tractors down from Theal.  Last but no means least, thanks to Matty Taylor for staying and towing people out to the last one.  At the end of the day not one person complained about waiting to be towed out and had nothing but praise for the club for not cancelling the meeting. Matty Taylor gave up two days of work (Monday & Tuesday) to help me restore the paddock field which we used for pits and once we had finished you wouldn’t think we had towed 160 vans etc out. That’s the scrambles over for another year, I’d like to take this opportunity to say a massive thankyou to everyone who made this event possible, without all of your help it simply would  not happen.  As someone a lot cleverer than myself said, there is no I in team. Until next year, bye for now                       Phil N. Scrambles secretary.

2023 Scramble Report. Our rescheduled 2023 scramble at Yatton Keynell, did not this year include a round of the British Classic championship. The weather was hot, very dry and the track was like concrete. The racing was plagued with accidents, incidents and red flags. In fact I’ve never seen so many red flags at our meetings! The number of races were cut short in the end, due to long waits between races whilst medics to deal with the injuries.

Entries were good, most likely due to being run later in the year. We had a good number of spectators on the day, but not too many, so we didn’t have any parking issues this year.

Many thanks to those who attended the work parties and all who helped on the day to make the event run. With the kind assistance of the landowner we raised £2500 for Dorothy House, which was brilliant.

Work Parties – Unfortunately very few people attended the pre-scramble work parties. This then made for a lot of work for a very few people on the event weekend. The event almost didn’t go ahead as we depend on these work parties to ensure the track passes the AMCA list of inspections. We ended up installing the start gate a few hours before racing began!

Hopefully things will change for next years scramble, as if people do not help to keep the event going, it will end. P.S There is some good video footage on YouTube!             John Payton. Outgoing Scrambles Secretary
